BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS RAISES $75,000 AT 140th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

guests at kids nite outPROVIDENCE, RI – On Saturday, November 22 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence celebrated its 140th Anniversary Celebration at the annual Kids 1st Nite Out.  At the event the Boys & Girls Clubs netted over $75,000; honored Robert Schacht, one of its longest standing volunteers, with a President’s Volunteer Service Award, and celebrated the positive impact of adults and children spending time together.

Colonel Brendan Doherty, superintendant of the Rhode Island State Police, was the keynote speaker.  During his remarks Doherty commented on the high cost of incarcerating youth in the state training school versus the relatively low cost of keeping a child in the Boys & Girls Club for a year.  He stated that he was going to participate in the Stand Up For Kids appeal and urged members of the audience to join him.   The result was a generous outpouring of $6500 in new funds to support Club programs.

Robert Schacht, a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs Board of Governors, was presented with the President’s Volunteer Service Award by Anne Szostak, Chairman Emeritus of the Boys & Girls Clubs of American and Dave Ross of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President's Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.  Schacht was given the award because of his long-standing commitment to providing hope and opportunity to the youth of Rhode Island through the programs of the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Guests at the event, including representatives from title sponsor Mastors & Servant, had dinner with members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence Clubhouses in Fox Point, Hartford Park, North Providence, South Side, and Wanskuck.  For the children Kids 1st Nite Out was their first formal outing for an event of this nature.

“ The staff members here are so much fun., I like it that they're always looking out for me - but they also let me make my own decisions.”
