DOMINION ENERGY AND THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF PROVIDENCE COUNTING ON ALGEBRA TUTORING TO HELP KIDS SUCCEED
To graduate from high school – and succeed in the jobs of the future – today’s students increasingly need to demonstrate proficiency in advanced math and science. Success in Algebra is considered by many as the gateway to more sophisticated math and science courses crucial to academic performance. However, according to the 2008 Rhode Island Kids Count Factbook, only 26% of fourth graders and 24% of eighth graders scored at or above the proficiency level in math. In addition, a recently released report by the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) found only 22% of Rhode Island high school juniors scored at the proficient level.
In response to this alarming statistic, Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence – with the generous support of Dominion Energy, the owner of the Manchester Street Power Station, located in downtown Providence – is launching an Algebra Tutoring program for middle school youth. Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence will provide a comprehensive program that will reinforce and supplement the curriculum of the Providence Public Schools. The Algebra Tutoring Program will enable children to do better in school by developing the daily habit of completing daily math homework, encourage improvement in attitudes towards school, and result in higher success rates of passing algebra.
On June 10, 2008 Dominion Energy will present the Boys & Girls Clubs with a $10,000 check to help begin the tutoring program, thereby doing their part to help Rhode Island youth secure a better future.
